My First Quilt

Before lockdown I happened to be in Hobby craft and I bought a copy of a quilting magazine. It looked really interesting, so I bought it.

Many of the designs in the magazine were quite complicated for a first project, I thought, so I literally bought some cheap cotton quilt fabric from Amazon and my local fabric shop and just went for it. The magazine gives some really good advice. I did make a 'Peaches and Cream' quilt that was featured in the free booklet that came with the magazine for my second quilt.

When you sew your first quilt, and you absolutely must. Make a simple one with fairly big squares from fabric you love, for watching TV. You will set yourself up for success on your first go. The sense of achievement and pride you will feel every time you settle to watch TV, or blog is quite underrated. I'm all for the little things that make us feel good about ourselves.

Tip: Use a quilting foot - it helps keep all the seams the same width and straight.

Sewing the minimal quilting was really tricky on my domestic sized sewing machine. I kept having to roll it like a scroll and feed the fat sausage that it made through the small gap on my machine. Very entertaining to watch! I am so glad my first quilt was so simple, I learned a lot, just by doing it. The most important thing I learned is to press at every stage. It keeps the seams straight and parallel. It was not my intention to sew to a perfect grid, I wanted to practice straight lines first!

I also used a bias binding maker - only I didn't cut the fabric on the bias for the quilt edging - it didn't need to be curved or stretchy. They were super handy. My set looks something like this one:

I used quilt batting in my quilt. I used the 2oz, but I think I will use a thicker one next time.

Tip: Don't forget to press every seam to the dark side - so you don't have shadows under the light
colours. Also take care to trim your blocks all to the same width and keep them square.

Here is my finished Quilt with the grey reverse showing.

I bought a lot of the fabric very cheaply on Amazon and at my local Fabric Shop A and M Textiles They have a box on the counter filled with Fat Quarters. I like to get a few whenever I go in. It's a bit like choosing sweets in a sweet shop. A real treat.
