My Frankie Shirt and Stella Hoodie.

My Frankie Baseball Tshirt and Stella Hoodie.

Hello! Today I’m going to tell you about two patterns that I’ve made from the Tilly and the buttons Stretch book.

The first item I made from this book is the Frankie Baseball T shirt, this also being the first item of stretch fabric that I sewed. I went and bought some really cheap fabric at the fabric shop, because I wasn't sure I'd be able to wear it.

The instructions in the book were very clear and made it so simple. It's already had a few wears. I really love it, just wishing I had used nicer fabric...

As luck would have it, this sort of pattern on the Frankie Tshirt seems to use less fabric than you would expect and I managed to get a full T shirt out of one metre of fabric. This pattern has Raglan sleeves which I’d never sewn before, but I think I’ll be sewing a lot more of them, as they’re really really easy to put together.

The part that makes it so easy is that the sleeves are sewn in flat. The neck band is added and the side seams are sewn after the sleeves are attached. The only pity is I really wanted to sew a dress in this pattern and I am not confident enough to turn it into a dress. I actually went and bought a Mccalls pattern that’s a very similar style and sewed my first scuba dress, but that's for another blog. I really like the Frankie tee shirt and it’s turned out better than I'd hoped. I think I would like to make a few more of them, perhaps in some different colours.

The other thing that I made from this book is the Stella hoodie.

The only change or hack that I made to this, is I added a zip to the center front because I don’t like to wear tracksuit tops without a zip in front. I cut the traced front piece in half and added 1.5cm on each side to accommodate the opening zip and it came together really well.

You definitely need to insert the zip before you put on the hood or hem it. The instructions in the book were really easy to follow and I even like the idea of putting a shoelace to tie the hoodie in the front. I matched the shoelace to the zip and cuffs and to the hood lining.

I had so much fabric leftover that I really had to make something else. So after much umming and ahhing and having a careful look at the pattern I decided to make a pair of joggers without the pockets because I didn’t have enough fabric for that. I also didn't have a large enough piece of the fabric to make a complete set of legs so I actually made cut-offs and sewed on the leftover fabric to make a complete pair of trousers.  I think it actually turned out quite nice

I managed to get the seams in the front to match and the seams across the back of the knees to match. I now have a complete tracksuit and wasted very little fabric. I think in the future I will try to be more sustainable by using as much of fabric as possible. In fact I’m very happy with the result and I think I will be making more of these in the future because I’m very happy with the fit and I like the fact that I can choose whatever colour I want to make a tracksuit in. I will definitely look at colour blocking, too. I think I might also use this pattern to make a lighter-weight jacket with a hoodie for summer or spring. I just need to find the fabric. The fun part is searching for the perfect fabric.

I got the sweatshirt fabric from ebay. I also found the same cuff trims and extra long shoe laces on eBay. You can buy the fabric I lined the hood with here.
