My Burda Easy Top

I tried a quick and easy sew from Burda Easy. This pattern is also from the 6/2021 issue.

I saw this fabric used on another Burdastyle magazine pattern and you can imagine my joy when I saw it at my local fabric shop at a much more reasonable price.

The fabric is very soft and really quite warm. It was lovely to work with and because of the parallel lines in the pattern, it was really easy to lay flat for cutting.

The BurdaEasy magazine gives more detailed information than the Burdastyle magazine. As you can see, the method used for this top is similar to the method for sewing the Tilly and The Buttons Stella Hoodie in her book 'Stretch'.

I have tried both methods for setting in sleeves and for stretch fabric, the flat method is really very good, for two reasons: It is very quick and easy and if you ever need to reduce the side seams, it can be done without affecting how all the seams meet in the underarm area. With the inset method - it never looks quite right if the sides need taking in.

I chose the shortest sleeve version for my top, as I generally prefer my arms uncovered or I get too warm. This style is also great for wearing under a heavy coat and keeping my body warm if its snowing.

As you can see, once the neckpiece is attached, it is really easy to pin the sleeves onto the shoulders, taking care that the sleeve matches evenly along the front and back.

Sewing the hems on this fabric is a dream - it doesn't twist or pull - all straight sewing.

I have a trick I use when sewing this type of collar, I first close the seam on the collar with the overlocker, without cutting. I then pin it to the neckline and stitch it, again without cutting. Lastly when I have checked it is sewn on straight, then I sew the last pass and remove (cut) the seam allowance. This method allows me to unpick the whole thing if needed - right up to the last possible moment.

If I make it again, I think I will try it in a smaller size - I think the ease for this pattern is slightly on the generous side.

This is a very good project if you are using an overlocker for the first time - in fact, it's even easier than attempting a t-shirt. It has square dropped shoulders, so there are virtually no curved seams.
