Leopard Print Blouse - Free Threadcount Pattern

I thought I would share my latest sewing misadventure.

This pattern really caught my eye. It's got a few features that I like in a few things I already own. It is also a lovely drapey style and appears quite simply made. I say appears, because, making it in viscose is proof I still have a lot to learn about working with viscose.

I followed the advice given, in the instructions and cut my fabric out in a single layer. Viscose is very light and has a tendency to move about as you cut. I ended up using various items as pattern weights to hold the fabric in place and cut very carefully around each piece - it took far longer than I expected, so I didn't finish it in one weekend as originally intended.

I applied the fusible interfacing before cutting the interfaced pieces out. I think it's definitely easier. Its also better for making sure the interfacing is bonded right to the edge.

So, I tried on the top to see if the shoulders finish in the correct place on my shoulders. They do, but I noticed something very serious...

Picture of me, looking rather displeased.

This top looks so awful on me, I suppose I should have thought a bit more carefully about what is in effect a 'bubble' hem right on my waist. I even tried taking it in at the sides. Let's say I am not exactly as slim as I once was. Perhaps something a lot less bulky in the waist would be better. I am rather upset as I was really looking forward to wearing it. I will put it to one side and see if I feel like trying something else with it. It's such a pity because the neckline turned out perfectly. I suppose it was a valuable learning exercise. This will probably look lovely on someone slimmer than me.

I will look at doing a few projects which are similar to ones I've had great success with and use those to extend my wardrobe. I am thinking about a few t-shirts and possibly another shirt pattern - maybe a shirt dress.

I love this viscose fabric, don't get me wrong, I will try a different pattern in this fabric. I bought it on eBay if you want some, too.

I am not disheartened, I will just think a little more carefully about what suits me in future.

As a new, beginner sewer, I do get to take away a few lessons, though;

- Cutting viscose on a single layer is far better for accuracy, than cutting two layers.

- Don't cut notches for marking on viscose - it tears rather
    easily if the notch is near the seam. I use tailor's chalk.

- Don't use steam when ironing, it crinkles up like crazy - although not permanently.

- A warm to hot iron is best - not too hot, though.

I try to post new posts on Facebook, as well as new YouTube videos.

I hope to post a success next time. In the meanwhile, happy sewing and be sure to share your makes on our Facebook page.
